USA Health Care Law Passes!

USA Health Care Law Passes!

For the USA, a historic vote in the US House, full of all the things controversial & messy, which make watching American politics so interesting for the rest of the world. The USA now moves into the 21st century with heath care finally being made affordable for the people. The insurance industry had to know, just like the bankers are going to find out, that you cannot buy legislation that is harmful to the US for a long period of time that will not suffer a reversal, which swings the pendulum far in the other direction.

Health Care reform was so needed to counter the for profit abuses of the insurance companies who would callously and routinely deny coverage to those that needed it desperately. Children that are born sick cannot be denied coverage anymore and those that get sick cannot be denied coverage. This law is huge as many were paying premiums for a long time and then when they got sick, the insurance companies would look for reasons to deny them coverage, or to end their coverage.

Also included were provisions that remove student aid from the US banks and takes it into the government. Pell grants really help low income people get a chance at the American dream by educating themselves.

Next up in the USA is new legislation for immigration reform, which shows the power that the Hispanic community is wielding today, as they exert their power to get things that help their communities.

Lawsuit MadoffwithmyMoney Family!

Their is a new lawsuit against the Madoff family members that were involved with the massive ponzi scheme that was the finical ruin of many investors who were seeking high returns and not doing their homework and checking out the investments. Normally a lawsuit against the government would be a waste of time do to laws that prevent the government from being sued but the lawyers that are bring the case seem to think that they have the legal grounds to make the SEC liable, which if they succeed would be a very interesting precedent.

The lawsuit seeks roughly 200 million dollars from the family members of Madeoffwithmymoney fame. they specifically are seeking 198,743,299 now if it was me I would have really tried hard to get that amount over 200 million instead of just 198,743,299 because 200 mil is a much bigger number, Lucky for Bernie's family that it was 1,256,701 otherwise this could have been a really serious case!

I really hope we get to see all of them in jail.

You know what is really funny is that the pictures that they use of Bernie make look like George Washington Makes cents when you are talking big money!

Wills, probate and lawyers

Will, probate and lawyers,  Believe it or not but some people have a fear of lawyers and as a result when they need one they often wait till they have all ready hurt their chances of getting the result that they might have gotten if they had taken action and contacted a lawyer earlier on in.

For sure if there is a area that this is the most true is wills and the resulting probate, if you do not have one you are putting at risk your family’s assets from being ripped at from many different sources, including family members that you would have not directed those resources towards, exorbitant lawyers fees, and the state could end up with more of your wealth.  Once you are gone there is no going back and fixing it.

The real tragedy of this is that this is something that can be done for most estates very inexpensively with a form will, or a simple will that is prepared by a cheap lawyer. Another option is to have a paralegal draw up a simple will for you and have it checked by an attorney.

You can also do what is called a holographic will where you hand write what you want to happen when you are gone which works in some states but not all. There are some draw backs to this that you should talk to an lawyer about but in most cases you can do this in a simple consultation that should be relatively inexpensive.

Foreign Immigration Laws

Foreign immigration law Thailand

I was researching something else and found this which  I found interesting just because of the fact that if you had a regualr social security check and wanted to immigrate to Thailand that you would not be able to as your monthly income would not be high enough according to the Thai immigration law.

How is that if you work all your life in the worlds most powerful country and when you retire you have to stay in USA because your labor if you were not lucky enough to get a pension which is most Americans these days.

When this was written the Thai baht was 33 to the USD in foreign exchange FOREX in Bangkok Thailand. I was doing the math works out to roughly 25K in the bank or just under  2 thousand a month. or a combination of both so if you had saving of around 10 thousand USD and a full SS check you would meet the requirements as I read it.

In the case of a retiree: permission will be granted for a period of not more than 1 year at a time, the following rules and conditions are guidelines for the Immigration Bureau to follow in granting foreigners permission to stay in the Kingdom of Thailand on a temporary basis.
  1. The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM); and
  2. The applicant is 50 years of age or over; and
  3. Proof of income of not less than Baht 65,000 per month; or
  4. Account deposit with a bank in Thailand of not less than Baht 800,000 as shown in bank account transactions for the past 3 months; or
  5. Annual income plus bank account deposit totaling not less than Baht 800,000 as of the filing date of application
  6. For an alien who entered Thailand before October 21, 1998 and continuously allowed to stay in the Kingdom as a retiree, the following shall apply:
  •  He/she must be 60 years of age or over and has regular income. His/her bank account deposit shall not be less than Baht 200,000 a year and evidence of the account deposit for the previous 3 months must be shown; or he/she has a monthly income of not less than Baht 20,000.
  • If he/she is under 60 years of age but not less than 55, the alien shall have regular income with a bank account deposit of not less than Baht 500,000 a year and evidence of the account deposit for the previous 3 months must be shown, or he/she has a monthly income of not less than Baht 50,000.
